The major projects in progress of the Athens Metro Line 4 and Thessaloniki Metro Extension to Kalamaria were presented by ELLINIKO METRO S.A.’s CEO Mr. Christos Fafoutis in the framework of his speech entitled “The progress of works for the construction of the Athens and Thessaloniki Metro projects”.
This presentation was made in the framework of the 2nd Thematic Area entitled “National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) – Urban Transport” during the 2-day conference “NSRF 2021-2017: The Sectoral programs, Progress that can be measured, Future that can be built”. The subject conference was held on April 20th and 21st 2026 at the Zappeion Megaron and was organized by the General Secretariat for Management of Sectoral Programs of European Regional Development Fund, Cohesion Fund and European Social Fund and the Special Service for Just Transition of the Ministry of National Economy and Finance.
Mr. Fafoutis referred to the strong social, financial and environmental footprint of these projects which, as stressed, have direct and indirect impact on the upgrading of the quality of life and the daily lives of the citizens in the two largest cities of Greece.
As pointed out by Mr. Fafoutis:
“The benefits of the Metro extension projects are imminently recognizable. Once completed, the subject projects can drastically reduce road traffic in the majority of central road arteries, the citizens’ travel time, the emission of vehicles’ air pollutants and the number of road accidents”.
The CEO also stressed the importance of utilizing the European and National Funds of the Program “URBAN TRANSPORT 2021-2027” in projects that contribute in a decisive manner to the transformation of the urban transport map in Athens and Thessaloniki.
With special reference to the projects, Mr. Fafoutis stressed that:
- Thessaloniki Metro extension to Kalamaria is expected to be completed and commissioned in summer 2026, while
- The works for the construction of the new Athens Metro Line 4, which constitutes the greatest public infrastructure project in Greece, are in progress, the objective being to be completed by 2032.
Through these projects, ELLINIKO METRO S.A. confirms its strategic role in the configuration of a more modern, sustainable and accessible transportation system, contributing decisively to improving the daily lives of the citizens and protecting the environment.
