Construction of the new Athens Metro Line 4 – Section A “Alsos Veikou – Goudi”
With regard to the flow of earth paste in streets in the area of Kyspeli, ELLINIKO METRO S.A. proceeds with the following information announcement:
During the excavation works executed using the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), carried out in the framework of boring the Line 4 tunnels, foam containing special chemical additives is injected under controlled pressure at the excavation face for reasons related to the safety of overlaying structures in view of stabilizing the earth pressure. The boring of the tunnel section in the Metro Line extending from Katehaki to Evangelismos has already been completed following this specific methodology, while no settlement whatsoever occurred.
Earlier in the area of Kypseli, through an old sewage pipe, there was leakage of the earth paste, i.e. a mixture of the excavated material itself with the injected foam under pressure. The material ended up in the yard of an abandoned building and from there to adjacent streets.
The contracting joint venture of the project has already removed the material in question and cleaned the area. This incident does not constitute a safety hazard or cause any long-term pollution.
