Metro Line 3 Extension “Aghia Marina – Dimotiko Theatro” includes a 7.6 km long tunnel, 6 new modern stations (AGHIA VARVARA, KORYDALLOS, NIKEA, MANIATIKA, PIRAEUS and DIMOTIKO THEATRO) and 7 ventilation intershafts.
This is a 730,000,000.00 EURO investment project in areas of the Municipality of Piraeus and in other municipalities of Piraeus greater area (Nikea, Korydallos, Aghia Varvara), which were faced in the past with severe traffic congestion and were poorly served by public transport.
As of July 6th 2020, the first 3 stations of the Metro Extension to Piraeus, namely AGHIA VARVARA, KORYDALLOS and NIKEA, have been delivered to the public. The commissioned stations were designed by ELLINIKO METRO S.A. with priority given to bioclimatic features and to the safe circulation of the passengers in the Metro network.
Since the commissioning of the three first stations of Piraeus extension, it is estimated that the number of passengers using the Metro network was increased by 63,000 on a daily basis, while the residents of Aghia Varvara, Korydallos and Nikea municipalities now benefit from a modern Metro line.
The commissioning of the 3 first stations 2 years earlier than the completion of the entire Metro Line 3 Extension has great socioeconomic and other benefits, such as a positive impact on the fight against climate change: reduced car traffic by 11,000 vehicles and reduced CO2 emissions by 60 tons on a daily basis.
The entire Line 3 Extension was commissioned on October 10th, 2022.
Upon the completion of the project and the commissioning of MANIATIKA, PIRAEUS and DIMOTIKO THEATRO Stations, the total ridership on the Metro network is expected to be increased by 132,000 passengers/day, thus, reducing the circulation of private vehicles by 23,000 cars per day and carbon dioxide emissions by 120 tons per day.
It is pointed out that both the citizens and the visitors of the country will be able to travel by Metro and reach Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” directly from Piraeus Port in just 55 minutes.
It is important to emphasize that upon the completion of the project, a major Transportation Hub of particular importance is created in PIRAEUS Station, which functionally integrates two Metro lines (Lines 1 and 3), the Port of Piraeus, the Suburban Railway and the Tramway network, facilitating, thus, intermodal transfers.
In addition, the resulting connection between the Port of Piraeus and Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” via Metro Line 3 fosters growth in the greater area of Athens and Piraeus, with substantial benefits to the National Economy in general.
