The Minister of Infrastructures and Transport, Mr. Christos Staikouras, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructures and Transport, responsible for Infrastructures, Mr. Nikolaos Tachiaos and the Secretary General of Infrastructures, Mr. Konstantinos Magoulas visited today the worksites of Katehaki and Veikou TBM Shafts of the Athens Metro Line 4.

The political officials of the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport were briefedabout the progress of the Project and, in particular, the progress of works ofboth Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).

The first TBM at Katehaki Shaft has already bored and constructed 800m. of tunnel, while the second TBM at Veikou Shaft has bored the first meters of the tunnel.

Having inspected the relevant work activities, the Minister of Infrastructures and Transport,Mr. Christos Staikouras made the following statements:

“Today, we inspected the progress of works for the construction of the Athens Metro Line 4, a difficult, demanding yet emblematic project 13km long with 15 stations, which is expected to serve 340,000 passengers on a daily basis.

At Katehaki Shaft and Veikou Shaft we had the opportunity to see both TBMs named “Athina” and “Niki”, respectively.

TBM “Athina” has commenced its works from Katehaki Shaft towards Evangelismos and has already bored 840m. In the forthcoming period, the TBM is expected to advance at a more rapid pace, in view of completing the 5,000m. of tunnel that have to be bored by mid-2025.

TBM “Niki” was assembled mid-February and is commencing its boring activities from Veikou shaft towards Evangelismos. In line with the time schedule, it is anticipated to have completed the boring of the respective 7.1km long tunnel section in spring 2026.

The project is advancing and our aim is to expedite it in the forthcoming time period”.

TheDeputy Minister of Infrastructures and Transport,Mr. Nikolaos Tachiaos, stressed as follows:

“Today we visited an amazing worksite forming part of the largest project currently executed in Attica Region and probably the greatest public project under execution in Greece. The development of the worksite is indeed significant and the TBM works are progressing at a rapid pace; we hope that mid-2024 the TBM will have arrived at GOUDI Station.

We are holding on to the reassurance on the part of the contracting Joint Venture that the time schedule based on which the project contract was concluded is adhered to. I believe that this is a linear success of the Government and, in any case, at the end of this decade, the citizens of Athens will have a modern, safe, ultra-automated, driverless Metro that will connect Goudi to Galatsi.

The Secretary General of Infrastructures, Mr. Konstantinos Magoulas pointed out that: “This is indeed a very impressive project. We all care for and make diligent efforts that the project progresses in line with the time schedules set”.

The Managing Director and Vice Chairman of the BoD of ELLINIKO METRO S.A., Mr. Nikolaos Kourettas, the Managing Director of AVAX S.A., Mr. Konstantinos Mitzalis, and the Manager of the Contracting Joint Venture AVAX-CHELLA-ALSTOM, Mr. Nikos Spyridonakos, were also present with the political leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport.
