Once again this year Attiko Metro S.A participates in the International Fair of Thessaloniki, with a rich program of information and educational activities, as well as with other concurrent events, such as the opening to the public of “Sintrivani” and “Papafi” Base Line Metro Stations and “Pylea Depot”.

Throughout the duration of the 83rd International Fair of Thessaloniki, the visitors shall have the opportunity to see up close the first Metro vehicle which has already arrived in out city.

More specifically, the schedule of events by Attiko Metro S.A in the framework of the 83rd International is as follows:

Saturday, September 8th 2018

Sunday, September 9th 2018

Thessaloniki Metro is the most important transit development and environmental infrastructure project currently constructed in Greece, representing an investment that exceeds EURO 1.5 billion for the two lines under construction. It is anticipated that its completion will transform Thessaloniki into a modern European city, changing its urban landscape and drastically enhancing the citizens’ every-day life, offering at the same time transportation services to 300,000 passengers daily, at the first phase of its operation.
In line with ATTIKO METRO S.A. planning, THESSALONIKI METRO Project is anticipated to be commissioned late in 2020.
The Project
The single-track twin tunnels of the Project have been bored by two Tunnel Boring Machines – TBMs, while their section connected to the Depot has been constructed by the “Cut and Cover” method.
The Depot extends over an area of approximately 55,000 m2 and accommodates two main building complexes, for train-sets maintenance and stabling purposes, as well as the System’s Operation Control Center.
All stations are center-platform stations, with doors on either side, isolating platforms from the track area; the platform screen doors open concurrently with the doors of the train vehicles. Trains will be state-of-the-art, fully automated, driverless and will utilize a modern wireless signaling system – CBTC – for communication with the Operation Control Center.
The Project under construction incorporates the design and construction of:
• 14.4 km. of line with 2 independent tunnels
• 18 stations
• A Depot
• The Operation Control Center
The Progress of the Project
The tunnel boring activities in both lines of the Project – Base Project and Kalamaria – have been completed.
In sixteen (16) stations Civil Works have been completed, while the installation of Electromechanical (E/M) and Railway Systems along with the architectural finishes are in progress. Construction activities are in progress in Aghia Sofia Station – after to the completion of the excavation works – while in Venizelou Station antiquities are protected, so that the construction activities of the roof slab can progress, which will permit and the works for the construction of the Project to commence.

Archaeological Sites and Excavations
The most extensive archaeological excavation ever conducted in Northern Greece, covering an area of 20,000 square meters, is underway. The archaeological works, rising up to a budget of EURO 132 million in total, have unearthed 300,000 archaeological finds. Some of these finds will be displayed within certain stations which will function as landmarks of the city of Thessaloniki. Special reference must be made to “Venizelou” Station, where archeological works brought into light the entire width of the center road axis of the Byzantine city along with the aqueducts, the junctions of the two streets intersecting the road axis, shops, and the remains of the adjacent buildings. This magnificent archaeological find will be preserved on site to harmoniously blend with the modern Metro Station that will be constructed at this very spot. Once completed, Venizelou Station will be a “landmark” for the city of Thessaloniki.
Future Planning
1. THESSALONIKI METRO Westbound Extensions
The aforesaid project will soon be mature, in communication with the affected Municipal Authorities, through in-situ visits and consultations with all involved agencies. A proposal has been formulated combining two separate and independent Extensions to the West into one unified solution, consisting in an underground circular line with two independent tunnels, approximately 11km long, and eight (8) underground stations; the option is given for this line to be further extended towards Papageorgiou Hospital, Oraiokastro and Sindos.
Preparation of the tendering process for the award of the archaeological works and public utility organizations network relocations, as regards the aforesaid extensions, in fall 2018.
2. THESSALONIKI METRO Extensions from Mikra to MAKEDONIA Airport
Maturing of the aforesaid project, through various contacts, the provision of Information and meetings with the involved Municipal Authorities, in-situ visits and consultations with Institutes and other competent Agencies (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, FRAPORT, Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund, Civil Aviation Authority) aiming at formulating an alignment proposal combining an underground, at grade and elevated two-way railway line approximately 6km long with four (4) stations; the option is given for this line to be further extended to the south, to provide transport services commuters to / from Halkidiki.
Base Project
The construction of the Athens Metro Base Project commenced in November 1992; the initial planning included the construction of approximately 20km. of network in 2 Lines and 21 stations.
Currently, the most significant transportation project in Athens extends over a network of 60km. of line with 40 modern stations (the 4 stations and the 20.7 km. of the common Metro/Suburban Railway network are also included), serving 938,000 passengers on a daily basis.
The particularity of the Athens Metro lies in the fact that its construction was the incentive for the implementation of the most important archaeological project; the greatest archaeological excavation (extending over an area of 79,000 square meters) was conducted in Athens revealing more than 50,000 archaeological finds.
Extension to Piraeus
The extension to Piraeus is an investment amounting to 730 million Euro on areas of Piraeus Municipality and other Municipalities in the wider area (Nikea, Korydallos, Aghia Varvara) facing acute traffic problems and low level of services by the public transport means.
Upon completion of this extension, 132,000 passengers will be served on a daily basis, while the total travel time from Piraeus port to the Athens International Airport by Metro will be just 55 minutes.
Linking of Piraeus port with the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” through Line 3 will yield significant benefits for the growth of the wider Athens and Piraeus areas.
Especially as regards Piraeus station, the plan foresees the creation of an important Transport Hub by interconnecting two Metro lines (Line 1 and Line 3), the Port, the Suburban Railway and the Tramway extension to Piraeus, facilitating thus transfers from/to all transport modes.
The three (3) first stations of the Extension (namely Aghia Varvara, Korydallos and Nikea) are at an advanced progress stage (the installation of electromechanical systems and architectural finishes related activities are in progress) and it is anticipated that they will be commissioned in the first semester of 2019. It is expected that the three (3) subsequent stations (namely Maniatika, Piraeus and Dimotiko Theatro) will be commissioned in June 2021.
New Line 4
The budget of the new line is 3.8 billion Euros, the line will be 38km long and it will accommodate 35 modern stations; it consists in four independent and distinct sections, namely:
• Section A: Alsos Veikou – Goudi (12.8km long, 15 stations)
• Section B: Goudi – Maroussi – National Road (14km long, 11 stations)
• Section C: Evangelismos – Ano Ilioupoli (4.1km long, 3 stations)
• Section D: Alsos Veikou – Petroupoli (7.3km long, 6 stations)
Benefits to derive from the implementation of Line 4
Easy and safe transfers, time saving and the consequent reduction of CO2 emissions constitute important factors contributing to the improvement in quality of life for the residents of the study area and the wider urban cluster of Athens.
Line 4 shall be state-of-the-art and shall feature automatic driverless trains, platform screen doors (PSD), wireless CBTC type signaling system and advanced energy-saving systems.
Section A’ of Line 4 “Alsos Veikou-Goudi”, which is 12,8 km long with 15 underground stations and whose budget reaches the amount of 1,5 billion Euros, was tendered in April 2017; it is anticipated that the Contractor to undertake the construction of the subject Project will be appointed at the beginning of 2019.
The Athens Tramway network consists of three lines, Syntagma – Voula, Syntagma – Piece & Friendship Stadium (SEF) and Piece & Friendship Stadium (SEF) – Voula; its line is 25.9 km long and it accommodates 48 stops, three out of which, i.e. Syntagma, SEF and Asklipio Voulas, are terminal, while four stations, i.e. Syntagma, Neos Kosmos, Fix and SEF are Metro/Tramway transfer stations.
The new Tramway network extension to Piraeus, currently under completion stage, includes the extension of the current tramway system from the existing Neo Faliro stop to the terminal Akti Posseidonos stop at the port of Piraeus and there-from to the existing terminal SEF stop. The overall length of the line is 5.35 Km, it features 12 modern stops, while urban landscape redevelopment works are carried out along the entire tramway line.
A total daily ridership of 35,000 passengers is foreseen.
