Thessaloniki Metro
Thessaloniki Metro is the largest transportation, development and environmental infrastructure project currently under construction in our country, an investment exceeding EURO 3 billion for both lines, transforming Thessaloniki into a modern European city, changing the appearance of the urban landscape and radically improving the daily life of citizens.
The Base Project was commissioned on November 30th 2024, while the Extension of the Thessaloniki Metro to Kalamaria is anticipated to be commissioned in 2025.
Thessaloniki Metro (Basic Project) consists of a line of 9.6 km long, 13 modern stations and a Depot covering a surface of 55,000m2 in the area of Pylea.
It features 18 state-of-the-art ultra-automated driverless and air-conditioned trains, as well as automatic Platform Screen Doors in each station, in view of providing passengers with the optimum service and safety.
It is anticipated that, upon completion of the Extension to Kalamaria, the daily ridership will rise to 313,000 passengers. In addition and as a result of the project’s operation, the number of the private vehicles circulating daily will be reduced by 57,000, and the corresponding CO2 emissions will be reduced by 212 tons per day.
It is worth mentioning that, given that the project’s construction incorporates the most recent technologies and the most demanding specifications/standards of quality and operability, Thessaloniki Metro is – undoubtedly – the most modern Metro system in Europe.
